Jasper Francis Cropsey (1823-1900)

Very nice still life by this famous Maryland artist. James Peale was the younger brother of artist Charles Wilson Peale. Like his brother, James passed down the family tradition of painting to his children. James Peale actually made frames as his major living, doing so for his brother's paintings.

James' brother Charles taught him how to paint upon his return from London in 1769 where he had studied with Benjamin West. James painted portraits and still-life's at the outset of his career, then his brother Charles turned over his large miniature practice to him. In the late 18th century and into the early 19th century, James devoted himself to miniature painting. Late in life he painted still life and landscapes.
