John Joseph Enneking (1841-1916)

Enneking was born near Cincinnati, Ohio. He trained in Cincinnati, Boston, Munich, and Paris. He painted in a style that could be called "Proto-Impressionism." It shows the Impressionist's sensitivity to light and color but does not sacrifice the more traditional brushwork and perspective. Enneking became an active member of the Boston art community and a highly successful artist in his native city. His very generous and wide paint application and conservative delineation of space comes from his schooling at Munich's Royal Academy.
