Andy Warhol (1922-1987)

Andy Warhol was a painter, film-maker, publisher, and a major figure in the "Pop Art" movement. In the 1960s, he started to make paintings of famous American products, such as Campbell's soup cans. He switched to silkscreen prints, looking to make art of mass produced items, but to mass produce the art itself. He hired and supervised workers engaged in making his prints, films, and other items at his studio, "The Factory," located in New York City. In the 1970s and 1980s he primarily made prints of very famous entertainment and political people such as Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Mao Tse Tung, and Elvis Presley. Famous people are a general theme in Warhol's later work. This is an example of one of many "Mao" silkscreesn he did in many sizes.
